SWAN MAIDEN’S SONG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIRn_ciIoAA Have you ever had a life-changing dream?! In a dream I had in Sweden summer 2017 I was shown the soul journey of a Swan Maiden and her infant son after she died in childbirth. I was mystified and did some research. This took me to the town of Vedbaeck in Denmark, just north of Copenhagen. In 1975 a Mesolithic era cemetery was discovered here. The body of a young woman (aged about 18) was found with the body of a premature baby boy. It is presumed that she and her son died in childbirth. The baby was cradled in a whooper swan wing and he…

Book Review: Sacred Plant Initiations – Communicating with Plants for Healing and Higher Consciousness by Carole Guyett

This is a very sincere and beautiful book, about ceremonial work in a magical place. It is based on decades of personal experience working closely with plants and their spirits. The author uses her own unique method, (that is to say: I had not heard of it before!), called plant dieting. Essentially this involves making an elixir from parts or extracts of the physical plant and then drinking this ceremonially as well as (intentionally and intensely!) connecting with the spirit of the plant for a certain amount of time. Generally speaking this is done ceremonially as a group while people are fasting during that time. That fact alone will bring…

    The Divine Child

I am writing this article on Boxing Day or Annandag Jul in Swedish (our family is in Sweden). I always pay close attention to dreams and my dreams last night were full of children. I am wearing a warm furry silver cloak and walking around a forest. There is a spectacular night sky overhead. The stars are reflected by the ice crystals trapped in my cloak meaning that I myself am sparkling with star light (not unlike a Christmas tree!) I am Mother Winter! All around me child spirits are darting around and playing in trees: luminous, joyful but also “ghostly”, as-yet-unborn. I open my cloak and give them…

The Wild Hunt of Frau Holle and Her Heimchen In Europe the months of November and December are the classic time of year when the Veil is thin and we catch glimpses of a phenomenon called The Wild Hunt. In this art video shamanic teacher and painter Imelda Almqvist explores the role of a very ancient Northern European goddess called Frau Holle, as a soul conductor for children. There are many reports of her roaming the land and night sky accompanied by the spirits of dead children. This phenomenon is called The Wild Hunt. In Middle Dutch the name of the Milky Way was Vroneldenstraet: the street or highway of…

Children’s Book Review – The Natural Storyteller: Wildlife Tales for Telling by Georgiana Keable

The Natural Storyteller is a gorgeous heart-warming book full of stories that children (and people any age!) can relate to. It is a collection of stories, carefully gathered over a period of years, from all over the world (different sources, locations, periods in history). Some are based on myths, others on legendary figures or even saints (e.g. St Francis of Assisi makes an appearance – but in the story we meet his child self!) or extraordinary things that happened in the lives of ordinary people. What steals my heart about this book is that it unflinchingly addresses the turmoil and realities of life in the 21st century. The author does…

    The Global Apology Project

Does our world need a Global Apology Project?! About a week ago I ran the following post on my personal Facebook page: “While I was teaching in Philadelphia recently I received a piece of guidance (and it made me sit up in bed and pay attention): “our world will not heal until there has been acknowledgement and apology for every single act of injustice ever committed”. I teach all my students (in my Ancestral Healing work component) that shamanic healing work often means taking the place where an apology is owed and voicing that. I am teaching my students to get “beyond their own ego and their own ideas about right…

Book Review: Encyclopedia of NORSE and GERMANIC FOLKLORE MYTHOLOGY and MAGIC By Claude Lecouteux

As a teacher of Norse Shamanism and Germanic mythology this is one book I was delighted to receive and hold in my hands! It is a beautiful hardback book with many illustrations. As an encyclopedia it is not so much a book most people will read from A – Z (quite literally as it is organised alphabetically!) but it is a book to dip into when you are checking a reference. Maybe the name of an obscure god, or a symbol you cannot quite place … and so forth. Who were Hvedrungr or Eyrgfjava for instance?! A few decades ago, in secondary school, I had a teacher of Latin and…

Children’s Book Review: An A-Z collection of Behaviour Tales From Angry Ant to Zestless Zebra – by Susan Perrow Illustrated by Almut French

Children’s Book Review: An A-Z collection of Behaviour Tales From Angry Ant to Zestless Zebra by Susan Perrow Illustrated by Almut French This charming and beautifully illustrated book essentially offers something called “story medicine” as a creative strategy for parenting, teaching and even counselling. The key concept of story medicine or healing stories is that the right story, told at the right time, can unlock something within a child and eventually bring about desired (or much needed) change. One example would be of a child deliberately annoying other children and destroying the peace in the classroom for the whole group. The teacher might then read the story about Obnoxious Octopus…

ME TOO – The Hashtag Phenomenon

“Me too” or ~ #MeToo spread virally as a two word hashtag on social media this month (October 2017) to denounce sexual assault and harassment. The context for this is the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Obviously similar allegations have recently been made against the current president of the US, Donald Trump. The phrase was coined to be used in this particular sense by social activist Tarana Burke as part of an awareness campaign in 2016. More recently it was popularized by actress Alyssa Milano who encouraged women to “tweet” (repost and publicize this on social media) to demonstrate the widespread nature of abuse and misogynistic behaviour.…
