    Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces

The Temple of Dendur/Dendura/Denderah (Photo credit: touregypt.net) This beautiful shrine which honors the Goddess Isis, was part of a larger temple dedicated to Hathor. It was originally built on the left bank of the Nile in Nubia during the reign of Augustus Caesar. It was dedicated to both Isis and Osiris to honor the sons of a local Nubian chief. It is also called “Per Rekh en Iset”, meaning “The Place of Knowing of Isis”. The shrine, which stood on a wide stone platform, is small with three rooms, but extremely powerful. There is a portal with a front court and an inner sanctuary. There are carvings of the king…

    Short Story: Kiara, Episode 6

KIARA, Episode 6 Kiara stood shocked and bemused for a while, and then her memories started to return. Sensing the change in her, Moira handed her a stout branch from the forest floor. “We need more light, princess”, she said softly. Without thinking, Kiara gazed at the branch as the tip of it started to glow and burst into flame. “What do we need to do?” she asked. Moira looked at her in silence for a moment, trying to choose her words carefully. “We must place protection around the tree, call the guardian and then release any children from the house. Then we must burn the house and all its…

    WitchCrafting: Crafts for Witches

Glowing Snow Merry meet. A quick, easy and inexpensive way to bring a bit of winter inside this season is to coat glass candle holders with epsom salt. It’s a project suitable to do with children.   Choose an adhesive. It can be anything from Mod Podge to spray adhesive, glue or clear double-sided tape. Apply to it to the outside of the glass and then roll or sprinkle with epsom salt. Salt is sodium chloride and is edible. Epsom salt is not really salt; it’s magnesium sulfate in crystal form, so it looks an awful lot like salt, but it has more sparkle to it. It is not edible.…

    Tarot Talk

I love comparing cards! Let’s begin a comparison of The Chariot and Strength by looking at The Chariot of the Major Arcana. First, a quick review. There are 22 Major Arcana cards in a Tarot deck, with numbers from 0 to 21; the Majors usually deal with broader and more far-reaching life experience issues, archetypes that are easy for us to identify with and connect with at some point in our lives. An archetype (pronounced “ark eh type”) is a generic, idealized model of a person, an object, or a concept which can be copied, patterned, or imitated. The term archetype often refers to one of two concepts: a “stereotype,”…

    A Moment for Meditation

The 7th & 8th Chakras As I mentioned in the previous columns, when doing any chakra work, it is imperative to keep yourself grounded. While you can use any grounding exercise that you prefer, I have always used this one in my chakra classes: **Stand up, grip toes to the ground, long deep breathing, visualize your roots going deep into Mother Earth, keeping you grounded and centered. Inhale and bring the earth energy up to the base of your spine; exhale and let the energy return to the Earth. With each inhale, receive healing energy from the Earth; with each exhale, release all negativity. This will not hurt Mother Earth,…

    SpellCrafting : Spells & Rituals

Reclaiming Isis Merry meet! Isis has not been a goddess with whom I have worked. I hadn’t felt particularly drawn to deities from the Egyptian pantheon, but hearing ISIS in the news has led me to think her name is being taken in vain. She is not the most frightening terrorist organization: the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Isis is the Great Divine Mother of the Universe. She is the personification of femininity; she is the wife of a king and the mother of the god Horus. As such, she is the goddess of motherhood and children. She was the original madonna with child, later to become Mary and…

Finding Your Own Way: Book Review & Free Book Offer

I wrote this book as a response to over forty years of trawling through endless books on the occult, magic and mysticism. I am not saying that I did not learn a great deal from many of the authors, but, in some ways, they were also a distraction from this, now obvious, truth which was right under my nose. In the end, we must find our own personal path. No one who simply follows the spiritual path of another person will ever find their rightful place in the universe until they finally strike out on their own and discover their own, unique inner truths. Many of us…

    ThriftCrafting: Witching on a Budget

Holiday sales    Merry meet. Just as you may have stocked up on witch hats and black napkins after Halloween to save for next Samhain, look among the post-Christmas sale items for things that will be at home next Yule, as well as for other sabbats and rituals. I have a black bear that sat on my altar for half a year while I did a ritual using bear medicine; it returns there from time to time. There’s a polar bear, too, that walks across my altar especially around my birthday – both as the representation of one of my animal guides and of a yearling polar bear, shot by…
