    Paranormal Investigations

When I first started investigating, I was dead set (no pun intended) on gathering “scientific evidence” that ghosts exist.  I had gadgets and I had a tool belt to carry my gadgets in.  All those gadgets do is make you appear to be technologically hip – until your EMF meter goes off and the homeowner asks you why and you say, “Um… I’m not sure.”  Cover blown – your hip status just went down the toilet, folks. There are simply too many factors that come into play when you get gadgets involved.  Unless you are a photographer by trade, you likely don’t know all the intricacies of your camera and…

    Christian Magick, Then and Now

It might come as a surprise to learn that ancient Christians practiced magick.  In fact, they had elaborate systems of magick ranging from healing spells, charms, amulets and erotic love spells to revenge curses as varied as separating a man from a woman and a curse against a woman’s face and work. These were mainly Coptic Texts dating from the first century C.E. to the eleventh or twelfth centuries.  Many of the texts invoke the Archangels. They include prayers, hymns, magickal words and involve chanting sacred vowel sounds while performing elaborate rituals.  Upon studying them, the reader quickly gleans that these must have been powerful spells, indeed. From my own…

    Imbolc and the Two Brigids

In a world where we can turn up the thermostat when we get cold, it’s hard to imagine the sufferings of our agrarian Celtic ancestors in winter, centuries ago. Light and heat were generated by fire. Shelter and warm clothing for all but the rich was woefully inadequate. Starvation was a constant threat. If harvests had been poor; if precious livestock perished in the bitter cold, or from lack of adequate feed, new calves and lambs would not be born. The necessary food supply would fail, and scores of people, particularly the young, the old and the vulnerable, would perish. Imagine then the joy of common folk when Imbolc arrived!…

    Herbal Creations

I had this fantastic idea this month to post a great craft, something really intense to get some interest going in this new column; however life and its strangeness sort of bit me.  I have a very emotional and sensitive four year old son.  Over the past week or so, he’s been having horrid nightmares (night-terrors his doctor called them) but this diagnosis carried with it no solution.  This isn’t the first time this has happened to him, and I suspect it won’t be the last.  Being the crafty Hedgewitch type I am, I wanted to find a creative solution that he could help to make.  I decided to help…

Light Inside the Darkness: Musings on Meditation and Energy Work

The Secret to Energy Work: Kinesthetic Memory Techniques There are roughly 4 gazillion books out there detailing methods for moving energy through the body. And whether they refer to chi, ki, prana, or The Force, almost all of them use the same basic technique: visualization. Despite this wealth of spiritual training material available, the number of people who’ve managed to achieve anything using these techniques remains pitifully small. A skeptic might use that as proof that energy work is just a load of hooey, but perhaps the problem lies not in the idea, but the approach. Most people take the word visualization far too literally; the world of meditation and…

    Gems of the Goddess

Today we’re going to look at the Gems of the Goddess Hestia.  Hestia can teach us very important lessons about bringing our fire and our warmth into the world. Hestia is the Greek Goddess of the Hearth Fire, which means she ruled over all domestic issues.  Her name means “the essence”.  She’s the Goddess of Architecture, Hospitality and Ordinary People.  She managed to stay about the fray of quarreling and politics and gave all “unconditional love”. One of the ways you can work with Hestia is to be able to see into the heart and soul of someone to provide unconditional love and caring.  You can be generous and kind…

    Imbolc

Imbolc Stop. Listen. The wind is whispering “Winter is sleeping silently but Spring is near.” In the silence I can hear Her breathe And the stirs of things to come. As the branches of trees transform from The crone’s bone fingers to the maidens lush hair I wait And learn. For in this silence I keep Wisdom close From in the darkness Comes life I am life
