A Simple Path: Journey of a Hedgewitch

*The Hedgewitch lives in the space between the Village and the Forest. Between the mundane and the magical. S/He lives with a foot in both worlds. This column is dedicated to the Hedgewitches of the planet earth. May In the Hedge: Be The Mountain In my study of yoga, I found some underlying principles which are generally Buddhist in nature, that  fascinated me, ever since. There are 4 basic principles: 1. Love 2. Joy 3. Compassion 4. Equinamity Now, these first 3, I have them licked! I love love in all its many forms. I have no trouble incorporating love into my life, whatsoever. Joy! What a wonderful gift and…

Light Inside the Darkness: Musings on Meditation and Energy Work

The Cave Lie down and close your eyes, relax your muscles and pay attention the colors behind your eyes. Feel yourself drifting down, down, as if you were a gentle leaf falling from a tree. See the leaf in your mind’s eye, follow it to the ground and realize you’re standing in forest, slowly walking a worn path through the trees, a gentle breeze ruffling your hair. A tall mountain looms in the distance. As you walk, you realize you’re heading for a clearing near the base of the mountain. You step out of the forest and a summer sun, bright and warm, lights up your face and chest. You…

    Beltaine, May 1

Beltaine, May 1 Beltaine, also called May Day by many Christians. This Sabbat celebrates the fertility and union of the Horned God and the Goddess. At this time, life is renewing itself. Birds and animals are mating. In the fields, newly planted seeds are beginning to grow. Great fires are lit honoring the fertility God Belenos. Some leap the fires to show the exuberance of the season. A Maypole is erected and bright ribbons are hung on it. The Maypole, a phallic symbol, represents the masculine. The soft colored ribbons are the feminine. The union of the two symbolizes the union of the God and Goddess. This is the time…

    Celtic Awareness

Celtic Spirituality Celtic Spirituality is and has always been based on the fundamental knowledge that all existence is born of cyclical nature and therefore, all existence whether human or from nature has a direct link connecting the otherworld to the realm of the material world. From the Druidic teachings handed down through the Welsh tradition we are shown that there is an unseen world that intermingles and affects our perceptible world. Things are not always as they may seem. Everything that “is” exists on numerous synchronized levels. The human being, the cognitive creature that he is comprehends the world around him as having three dominions or levels as it were:…

    Speakin’ of Ghosts…

SO, WHY DO YOU LIKE TO “GHOST HUNT”? Imagine yourself as a child.  Your mother has asked you to fetch something from the cellar.  You don’t like the cellar.  Your mother thinks it’s nonsense and your brother will make fun of you (even though you know he hates it, too!) so you grudgingly head that way.  You pick up the flashlight and turn the knob to the door that opens into the musty darkness.  The cool air greets you but you’d rather suffer the heat than go down there.  Your weak flashlight beam finds the wooden steps and you begin the long descent into the black, praying something doesn’t reach…

    New to the Craft

Concepts of Deity As mentioned last month, divinity can often be a touchy subject.  Ask ten different people what their definition of the divine is and you are likely to get ten different answers.  Is there a God?  Is there a Goddess?  If so what are they like?  Every soul will ask these questions in their lifetime and either accept established doctrine or come to their own conclusions.  Spiritual growth is our quest for understanding of that which is greater than ourselves. And while we may arrive at ideas which are universal, the journey is, by necessity, personal. Wicca is not a religion that promotes dogma or rigid notions on…

    Animal Wisdom

Animal Faeries Spring is upon us, and May Day is almost here, the time of the Fey and a celebration of our Lord and Lady. But what about the faeries, did they own animals? Yes they did and I am going to devote this article to talking about these wonderful, horrible and sometimes mischievous creatures. Horses that rose from the sea only to be caught in nets, cats as big as dogs that guard faery treasure, and more! Cats Faery-cats are wild creatures, not the domesticated cats we know today. They are said to be the size of a dog and all black except for a white patch of fur…

    Let’s Spell it Out

Floralia: Beltane Renewal Spell with the Goddess Flora When thinking of Beltane, we usually think of the practices from northern Europe, but we can actually trace some of the roots to ancient Roman Paganism. The Romans honored many gods and goddesses, but during the Spring months, from the end of April to early May, the goddess Flora was celebrated with the flower festival Floralia.  Flora, the goddess of flowers, was the consort of Zephyrus and her major festival, Floralia, was associated with the dead as well as having strong sexual overtones. She was mainly worshiped by young girls who would giver her offerings of fruit and flowers and drape her…
