Aphrodite, Goddess of Love & Beauty
“April is the cruelest month…” This famous opening line of T.S.Eliot’s revolutionary poem, The Wasteland, published in 1922, fits the ancient myth of the birth and life of Aphrodite to a T. “Foam-risen” Aphrodite, (the Greek name for foam is “aphros”), was the product of a highly dysfunctional family. Her mother, Gaia, the generative Greek Earth Mother, tired of the constant attentions and cruelty of her husband, Uranus, who was both God of the Sky, and her first-born son. She asked one of their sons, Cronus, to castrate his father, so he would be unable to father any more children with her. (Uranus feared that their children would overthrow him…

Principles of Paganism, Lesson 2
Lesson 2 Will and Fate In pagan religion the future is fated, but this should not be understood in a straight-line sense. The mind of Moira, [1] the dark goddess of fate in Greek religion, is incredibly complex. She does not prescribe one series of events only, but allows for certain forkings to occur for each person at certain critical moments. When one is born, his or her fate is merely sketched out by Moira; in the course of life one will make decisions, and in response to these she will begin filling in details in the picture of one’s future. Will is of the spirit, and spirit, like everything…

Musings of a Massachusetts Witch
Should Children Remain in the Broom Closet? I am certain that I am raising my children in the way that is most beneficial for them. I believe that children need to be taught spirituality from a young age and it should be the same beliefs that are held in their home; for us that spirituality is Eclectic Wicca. We practice our faith daily and interact openly with other pagans within our community. I am “out of the broom closet” as I run a home based business that is centered around our beliefs. My children are aware of what I do and will speak about “Mommy’s Tarot Reading business” as easily…

A Witch’s View
Being in the broom closet is not a comfortable place to be. There’s too much old stuff hanging around, it’s far too small and it smells a little like mothballs. I’m not in the closet but there was a time when I couldn’t be my authentic self. I was far too worried that my friends wouldn’t be my friends anymore, my family would consider me weird and my then husband would ridicule me. It turned out I was right on all accounts. When you’re not living life how you feel you should be, you’re not being your authentic self. It crushes your spirit and often depression isn’t very far behind. …

Spellwork Through Poetry, Lesson 2
What is intent? Objective: define intent; why is intent important The definition of intent- and all variations of the word: intend, intention, etc- are “state of mind when something is done, purpose, the end or object; goal”. Our intent is the most important thing we have when we go into spellwork. It not only is the most important, but the most basic; the most primal. What do YOU want? Put aside all of the fancy forms that we will learn later in this class. Put aside all of the words that you are bringing together. Put aside all of the props we commonly use in ritual: candles, incense, wand, chalice……
