Sister Karol’s Book of Spells, Blessings and Folk Magic

by Karol Jackowski

255 pages

The idea of a book about spells and folk magic written by a religious sister with a Catholic background is fascinating. Sister Karol’s Book of Spells, Blessings and Folk Magic is a beautiful book that explores the impact of mainstream religion on what Sister Karol refers to as the religion of “none”.

The religion of “none” is described as persons who are “living at the heart of what the Dalai Lama sees as a spiritual revolution, a shift in consciousness touching the heart of those who seek to save their soul without religion”. The “nones” are described as persons who find divine inspiration not in organized religion, but in a level of profound concern about one’s own spiritual life and the well-being of others.

If you are a “none” this book will help you create and strengthen your own spiritual practice. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is written in regards to prayer, home altars and the magic of the ritual. The second section is a collection of old and new rituals from a variety of religions.

Helping you to enhance your own spiritual practices, Sister Karol provides insight into her spiritual practices of prayer, personal altars and sacred spaces. She sparks individual creativity to make your own home altars and sacred spaces by incorporating traditionally found items such as candles, flowers and incense burners with uncommonly found, yet loved items such as souvenirs, photos and other “non-religious” items. She assists the reader in creating their own prayers and rituals by providing a general outline of choosing the date, making the day holy, beginning the ritual, lighting the candles, incensing, making the magic and finally letting it be.

The book includes Sister Karol’s collection of favorite rituals and how they work. This is what she refers to as her “prayer book”. In this section of the book, you will find prayers, blessings and spells such as a Memorial Blessing, the Lord’s Prayer and a Rosh Hashanah Blessing.

This is a well-written, thoughtful book that will provide you with the basics needed to work magic of your own in a way that may already be familiar to you especially if you are coming from a Judeo-Christian background. If you are on the path of seeking a break from organized religion, this book will assist you in creating your own individualized and personalized spiritual practice.
