The Pink Moon: Spells and Rituals

The 2026 April full moon comes on the 1st, peaking at 10:12 pm EDT (or 2:11 UTC, 2nd April). The Pink Moon is a modern name for April’s moon. The first full moon of Spring had many names over time, more than we will ever know. Some names used by groups such as the Anglo-Saxons and the Celts include the Seed Moon, New Shoots Moon, Growing Moon, Egg Moon, the Budding Moon or the Awakening Moon by Neo-Pagans.

The full moon is considered the high tide of psychic power and is exceptionally potent for spellcasting, especially for love spells, high magic, and difficult situations. Because of this peak energy, witches traditionally gather at the full moon for monthly ritual meetings known as Esbats.

I thought it would be fun to look up some easy full moon spells and rituals that anyone can do! Here are two that particularly resonated with me:

Communicating with you Cat: This spell comes from the book How to be a Real Witch by Deborah Gray. It is meant to help you understand what your cat is thinking or bring your feline familiar into your magic circle. (If you don’t have a cat then this can work for any other familiar, not just cats). To understand what your cat is thinking or to bring a familiar spirit near, wait until midnight on the night of a full moon. Grind a handful of aniseeds and a teaspoon of valerian tea leaves using a mortar and pestle while reciting, “By the eye of the cat, by the wing of the bat, be clean and clear. Bring the familiar spirit near.” You then place the mixture in a small cheesecloth bag and wear it in your pocket or hang it near your cat’s bed.

I personally don’t like the dialog used, it feels too much like something witches say in a kids movie. I will be swapping it out with something a bit more personal. Also, I prefer communicating my intentions by meditating on the feeling. So I will meditate for a little while with the focus of being able to connect with my cat. As always, you do you!

Flower empowerment water: This ritual comes from The Craft: A Witch’s Book of Shadows By Dorothy Morrison. You can gather appropriate flowers, remove the stems and leaves, and place the petals and buds in a glass of fresh water. Leave his glass overnight under the light of the full moon and drink it the next day to infuse yourself with the magical properties of the flowers.

I got big news yesterday, that I will be moving to California! So, this is the perfect opportunity for me to set those intentions for a smooth move and a happy life into the Flower Moon Water. Make it personal! What’s going on in your life, or not going on that you’d like?

Happy Spellcasting!
