Hearth and Home
Finding the Divine During the course of my life, I have never really been to far away from those people who walked the path of the Ancient Ones, although for the most I never fully realised it. My best friend back in New Zealand, mother’s family who, due to geographical distance I never met but they to had practised an old, earth based religion, perhaps this is the reason why I to have finally chosen this spiritual path – the Teutonic blood of my ancestors running through my veins. While I was drawn to a pagan way of life, I was also apprehensive at first, as much of the information…

Across the Great Divide
The Ghostly Side of Michigan State University To most folks Michigan State University represents many things: a top-rated education, a sports Mecca, even a party school. But there’s another side of the hallowed college campus that few ever see; and of those who have, most wish they hadn’t. Michigan may be the 26th State to enter the Union, but it’s in the top 10 for the most haunted. Stroll with me as I explore the ghostly side of Michigan State University. The first stop on our tour takes us to Fairchild Auditorium, which is rumored to be haunted by a young boy wandering around the stage and seats. Some report…

The Tarot
The Magician The Magician is the first card of the tarot deck marked with the number one above the image. The image shows a man standing behind a table one arm stretched upwards holds a wand the other arm stretched downward points towards the ground. Above his head floats a symbol of infinity around his waist a snake also a symbol of infinity. He is surrounded by a white halo and on his table are the four suits of the tarot the chalice, the sword, the staff and the pentacle. The magician is a spiritual being when I encounter the Magician while doing a reading he represents the all. He…

Me,Myself and I, Notes from a Solitary Practitioner
I stand inside the emerald woods In the twilight of the day I breathe in the ancient smell of trees And watch the squirrels play As darkness comes and the woods grow quiet I reluctantly must go Then as I turn to make my way I see a form I know Tall and stately, broad of chest Ancient wisdom in his eyes He gazed at me and then he said “You’re a child of the wise” An antler crown sat on his head And he was beautiful to see And as we stood together there, I felt him study me Then he said to me ” you love the earth,…

Interweavings
Spirit guides I love birds. Every morning, weather permitting, I sit on my great grandmother’s glider on our deck. I have a need to breathe the air and hear the stirrings of the birds as their day and mine begins. On days I can not be outside, I sit in front of my open bedroom window. The wrens and chickadees as well as the humming birds are used to my presence and enjoy the bird feeders and bird bath while I sip my coffee. This past year was extremely difficult as I had a great disappointment with a potential job which followed with three months of caregiving for my elderly…

Paranormal Path
The Stanley Hotel Redrum, redrum! Horror movie fans will remember those words vividly from Stephen King’s The Shining, a story about a man who slowly loses his sanity as the caretaker of a large hotel, The Overlook. Did such a place really exist? A hotel filled with spirits and ghostly activity? Actually King was partially inspired for the story while staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado. King even reports an encounter with the ghost of a distressed young boy calling for his nanny. The Stanley Hotel was constructed after F.O Stanley was diagnosed with tuberculosis. His Dr advised him to take in the clean mountain air though…

Wicked Wonderful Witchery
The Banishing Power of Fire: A Ritual There’s no denying the hypnotic, mesmerizing power of fire, whether in the gentlest candle flame or in the terrifying destruction of a forest fire. Of the four elements, fire is the most volatile and fast-acting. Its effects are often permanent and dramatic on the physical plane and the same can be said for when it is used in magick. The element of fire encompasses passion, determination, action, success, anger, sex, big changes and fast transformation. You don’t need to have access to a bonfire to harness the energy and spirit of fire in your spells and rituals. Most of us have to make…

Gems of the Goddess
Morrigan – FLYING QUEEN When you see a crow or a raven, do you think of them as an omen or a message bringer? Do you believe them unlucky or enchanting? Crows and ravens are believed to have many meanings and interpretations. Throughout history they have been known as creatures who can fly through the veil and back again, full of wisdom and power. Naturally these mysterious beings would be in common contact with the intelligent Celtic Goddess Morrigan. She has even been said to be one herself, flying over battle fields of war, and deciding the fate of the opposing side. This made her claim the name of The…

Perthro’s Pronouncements
Gods and Goddesses When I was asked to write this column, I had all ideas that I would write about the divine feminine, and what it means to be a man and embrace the divine feminine in myself. As it turned out, this is not going to be the case. In my explorations of the divine, and divine qualities, I found that I had a hard time with the entire idea of the “divine” having gender divisions at all. Sure, we have “male” and “female” deities, and I do believe they actually exist, but, I’m not sure they exist as beings with the male and female genders. While we are…
