Peeking in the Shadows: Crafting a Book of Shadows and Light

Over the next few months, we’re going to take a look at the categories and sections you may wish to include in your BOS. What you add to your BOS is as unique as you are and will evolve and change as you evolve and change on your path. Flexibility is key to organizing your BOS, but you should have a method of organization as well.

Let’s take a look at some of the sections you may wish to organize. These are just a few:

  • Astrology
  • Rituals

  • Spellcrafting
  • Herbs
  • Divination
  • Visionary
  • Energy Workings

This month, let’s start with Astrology….

Whether you have actively explored the study of astrology, if you follow a pagan path you have made use of the principles of astrology/astronomical timings. Every Esbat or Sabbat aligns with an astrological/astronomical event. Any spellcrafting that makes use of specific times of the day or days makes use of the astrological/astronomical principles. And, if you know something of astrology, you are probably making use of its energies, already.

A very basic tool to add to your BOS is a section labeled astrology where you can make notes about the astrological energy that is accessible. Beyond this, I would also suggest as your first entry into this section a copy of your natal chart. This can easily be obtained through a variety of online web sites that offer free charts. I like: You will need your date of birth, geographic location and exact or approximate time of birth. After plugging in this information you will have the three basics of what I call your “natal blueprint” (birth chart). These are your Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant/Rising sign. Doing some reading about each of these will give you a wonderful picture of your predispositions. Knowing more about yourself will also give you a way of finding resonance at a deeper level for the components you select for all of your magickal workings.
