Book Review- Tarot For The Hard Work: An Archetypal Journey To Confront Racism and Inspire Collective Healing by Maria Minnis

When I was offered a chance to review this book I knew I had to take it. As someone with a serious love of all things tarot and step mother two three beautiful mixed children who have already expressed feeling the weight of the learned societal beliefs that are so prevalent in the world today, I saw this as an opportunity to learn more about both. Having taken over a month to break down this book and all the work I did based on what I learned, I think this is a must read book for all new practitioners with an interest in tarot and shadow work. The activities in this book help you take a deeper look at how you view yourself and the world around you.

In this book, author Maria Minnis, takes the fool’s journey apart and uses the archetypes of the major arcana to narrate and explain where some of society’s ingrained and learned racism and harmful views come from. It asks readers to not only look deeper into themselves but also into the cards, uncovering new ways to read tarot, and new ways to inspire societal change. With each card, you’ll go deeper into the journey with meditations, group discussion prompts, and writing prompts to help you comprehend what you are reading. It also provides suggested actionable steps for societal change.

A great example of Minnis’ use of the archetypes is The Tower. In traditional Tarot, the Tower is seen as a sign of upheaval, a sudden change in situations or relationships, or an entire collapse of some kind. Minnis uses the Tower as a symbol of taking apart the harmful systems that have a negative impact on our fellow humans, and how to change any learned behaviors or beliefs that no longer serve us or the greater good of society.
