Midsummer Correspondences
History of Litha (MidSummer) Also known as Summer Solstice, Litha, Alban Hefin, Sun Blessing, Gathering Day, Feill-Sheathain, Whit Sunday, Whitsuntide, Vestalia, Thing-tide, St. John’s Day In addition to the four great festivals of the Pagan Celtic year, there are four lesser holidays as well: the two solstices, and the two equinoxes. In folklore, these are referred to as the four ‘quarter-days’ of the year, and modern Witches call them the four ‘Lesser Sabbats’, or the four ‘Low Holidays’. The Summer Solstice is one of them. Litha is usually celebrated on June 21st, but varies somewhat from the 20th to the 23rd, dependant upon the Earth’s rotation around the Sun. According…

Nelland Living
Hurrah all pagans! The wheel-of-the-year has turned my life into a virtually continuous celebration! These days I live from Sabbat to Sabbat, enjoying the ride, always changing, always eagerly looking forward to the future. This life I call Nelland. And I am called Nella. So I am Nella from Nelland. I hope to make lots of smiley faces and uplifted spirits here, and in my life overall. For I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy! What makes me happy, probably the most, is beauty. In nature and in life. Beauty is a powerful force, which in my opinion has only positive effects. It is my…

A Shamanic View
Signs of the Times? Incidence of mental illness is rising. More and more people are developing allergies, whether food or environmental. So many kids have lists of foods they can’t eat. More and more people are being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, autism spectrum disorders… Is anyone truly healthy anymore? So why is this? Are these new disorders, or are we only recently diagnosing them? What about all the “functional” disorders–the ones doctors can’t explain or find causes for, but can agree that the symptoms are real? From a shamanic point of view, all of these are symptoms of soul or power loss. We all have a…

Musings of a Massachusetts Witch
Living In Fear of the Monster It has occurred to me that the majority of our society here in The United States live in a constant vibration of fear that they are not even aware of. Perhaps they just flat out deny that they are scared or perhaps they justify their feelings and manipulate their thoughts so that the fear appears to be a logical thought and not a fear at all. But what is there to be afraid of? I mean we live in The United States of America. Wasn’t this country built on the idea of freedom? We as citizens have a plethora of civil liberties such…

Warrior Women
Let’s start with a warrior woman who was not so famous: Ms Maude Callen. Ms Callen was a nurse-midwife who laboured (Ha!Ha! Did you notice the pun?) in the lowlands of rural Berkeley County, South Carolina, in the heart of America’s South. She was born in Florida in 1898, married Mr Callen in 1921 and, in 1923, relocated to South Carolina as a missionary nurse. It is said the move was to be temporary, but Ms Maude Callen stayed and cared for folks for close to 50 years. Imagine. Just imagine the dedication, the drive, the conviction that what she was doing mattered. And it did. Ms Callen not…

Salves, Balms and Lotions, Oh My!
Salves, Balms and Lotions, Oh My! Now that our herb gardens are rocking, I thought I’d give you all a tutorial on how to make an herbal salve, a lip balm, and a basic lotion. herbal Salve To make a basic salve, all you need is an infused oil, beeswax and some essential oil. Making Salves: The Key Ingredients Infused oils are carrier oils that have been “infused” with one or more herbs. They are used to make any oil-based apothecary items, such as lip balms, creams, massage oils and salves. You can use any oil to make a salve, I personally like infused oils of…

herbal smoking mixtures – Part 2 Let’s expand our range of plants activated by fire. Some sources say that more than a hundred different herbs were utilized in Native American smoking mixes. What would your smoking mix be? Would you have several, for different tasks? Let your imagination play with the plants you most often use. What do they smell like when they burn? Are you tempted to inhale deeply? Give yourself free rein to try them out. So far as I know, the only plants that may cause you harm if you inhale their smoke are: Commercially grown tobacco, which is considered addictive. The Toxicodendron sisters – poison ivy,…
