Light Magic for Dark Times
and Practices for Coping in a Crisis
by Lisa Marie Basile
I was lucky to be sent a copy of the book “Light Magic for Dark Times” by Lisa Marie Basile. It’s published by Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc, 2018. This book is 176 pages and is a hardback.
This is a book that is perfect for the current state of the world. It is filled with self-care and coping practices targeted for the hard or challenging times in life. This book has lots of general information that will help any newbie to magic or rituals. It covers the basics like grounding practices, materials needed and cleansing. It also explains a bit about how magic works and how to help you invoke your own magic in your life.
The meat of this book however, is its wealth of unique rituals and spells. This book has some very different ritual suggestions that I’ve never seen before. So many spell or ritual books tend to regurgitate the same spells over and over again with just slight tweaks- not so with this gem of a book! Solid and substantial are the two words I would use to describe it.
Here is an idea of the types of rituals you will find throughout. Rituals aimed at dealing with grief and trauma, such as “a bathing ritual for moving through feelings of grief” and “an artistic practice for saying goodbye to something you’ve lost”.
It has rituals for dealing with negativity, such as “nature practices for negativity busting” and “a practice for honoring your truth after experiencing gaslighting”.
It also has rituals about receiving love, such as “a pick-me-up rose quartz elixir for self love” and “a healing love ritual for your younger self”.
Included, is also a section dedicated to identity and your body, with ideas such as “a practice for getting comfortable with a workout or physical health routine” (I’m excited to try this one). There is even a spell for “saying hell no to labels”- that is a breath of fresh air to me.
There is a section all about recharging and regeneration, with rituals such as “a spell to recharge after attending a protest or doing social justice work”- very helpful for many right now!
The section on shadow work contains rituals such as “a red rose ritual for aging acceptance” and “a practice for finding your shadowy archetype”.
There is a section all about writing magic, which incorporates your own writing into the rituals to make them your own. It has ideas for writing your own incantations, on magical journaling and grimoire writing, and magical poetry tips. This is probably my favorite chapter of the book. It’s just chock full of great material.
In the next section, it covers last minute ideas for magic on the go, in a pinch or in emergencies. The final chapter discusses finding your craft or finding the type of magic that works for you like working with plants, with kitchen witchery, sex magic and more.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this entire book, cover to cover, and will be trying many of these rituals myself. It’s a perfect book for a beginner, but it also brings forth so many different ritual suggestions that it’s a wonderful book for even a long time practitioner of magic. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. There is an abundance of great ideas inside these pages. I highly recommend this book to all. This may be my favorite book I’ve reviewed to date! Excellent read!!
