Introduction to Norse Mythology for Kids is a great book to begin with an overview of Viking Culture, Norse Myths, Norse Gods, Heroes and Monsters. While this book was written for children, it gives a broad overview of Norse Mythology and culture that would be beneficial to anyone interested in this topic. There is also a chapter dedicated to resources to continue your self education with after this book.
Our author begins by acknowledging how Norse mythology has been woven into modern pop culture through movies, television, books and comics. He also recognizes that the basis for Norse culture survives in the sagas and poems that survive from Scandinavia.
Throughout the book you will find “Viking Vocabulary” that explains where words come from to what they mean in Old Norse. At the end of each section there is a bullet list of “things to take away.” These bullet points are great to use in discussion and review of the book with children or even a book club.
Illustrations of ships, maps, fashion, longhouse plans, arms and armor, parts of a longship, the younger futhark alphabet, runestones, Yggdrasil and the Nine Realms enhance the book and the appropriate sections.
The Myths are told in modern language in a concise manner that will make it easy for children and discussion groups to listen to, comprehend and understand. Resources such as the Eddas are referenced for those that wish to read the original sources of these myths and stories.
This book is an excellent choice for anyone who loves history and mythology. I would recommend this book for those interested in learning more about Norse mythology, study groups, homeschoolers, or those curious in the Norse path.
