This deck of thirty-three oracle cards accompanies “The Healthy Witch: A Workbook for Optimum Health,” written by TJ Perkins and published in 2019. Both are intended to guide readers to become the best witch possible with suggestions for physical, mental, and emotional healing. Given only the cards, this review is about them as a standalone purchase.

The presentation of the deck and a small booklet inside a tin is appealing.

To use the cards, Perkins writes in the two-paragraph introduction, “pull a card a day and let the Universe guide you on how to focus your mind/body/soul on healing energies.” By following the signs, associations, suggestions, and tips for each part of the body, a healing journey aligned with the author’s mantra “as within, so without” can occur. The idea is that learning to personalize your own healing needs and methods allows for optimum physical and spiritual health, thus improving spell work.

When using the deck for a week, it never felt the card I pulled connected to what I was experiencing. For instance, the day I was having intestinal and breathing issues, I pulled “Bones & Teeth” that “could be telling” me I needed more calcium, and to get it from natural food sources, but did not list what foods those might be.

I invited two witches and two aunts to pull cards. Their feedback included, “It’s very general,” “It’s not always feasible to rearrange one’s life as suggested by these cards,” “The perceived value of this advice is ambiguous at best,” and “If a person chooses a card they don’t think relates to them at all, there’s a hard time connecting to what’s being said because they can’t figure out why they chose that card on that day.”

Considering the workbook has received fifty ratings on Amazon averaging 4.6 out of 5, I believe it’s safe to say workbook users would appreciate this oracle deck.

TJ Perkins is the author of an eight-book mystery series and a five-book fantasy series for young adults, along with numerous short stories, in addition to The Healthy Witch workbook and oracle cards. A strong presence at Fantasy & Faerie Cons, Perkins conducts writer workshops for adults and teens.

About the Author:

Lynn Woike

All my life I have known magic was real. As a child, I played with the fae, established relationships with trees and “just knew things.” In my maiden years I discovered witchcraft and dabbled in the black-candles-and-cemeteries-at-midnight-on-a-fullmoon magick just enough to realize I did not understand its power. I went on to explore many practices including Zen, astrology, color therapy, native traditions, tarot, herbs, candle magic, gems, and, as I moved into my mother years, Buddhism, the Kabbalah and Reiki. The first man I dated after my divorce was a witch who reintroduced me to the Craft, this time by way of the Goddess. For 11 years I was in a coven, but with retirement, I have returned to an eclectic solitary practice.
