A Book of Seasons   I invite you to journey with me as we create a Book of Seasons. This book will be a personal journal that will be a companion on our sacred walk through this new year. As individual as each of us, no two books will be alike. It can be a diary, art journal, spell book, daily gratitude list, or something unique that speaks to your heart.  My own Book of Seasons combines all of the above. Each month I will suggest a focus, affirmation, artistic activity and a food to explore.  This is one way of fully experiencing the “now” and bringing into our intentions…

Simplicity Love Order Faith Joy Respect Beauty Gratitude Self Dicipline and Self Reliance Peace Charity Courage Our turn on the wheel as brought us to December and Courage.  As I look back over the past calendar year I  see twelve simple words.  Twelve ideas that seem so easy to practice.  On paper and in my mind, I easily handle every virtue in my day to day life. Yet, when I got “out of my head” and into the real world to live each word, I quickly learned that turning a vague word into a verb was not easy.  It took energy.  It took planning.  It took commitment. The first quarter…

Charity As our year of examining virtues as applied to our pagan path moves forward, we come to November and Charity.  Generosity and helpfulness is a definition of this virtue.  How can we manifest this virtue in our daily walk? Here in the States the celebration of Thanksgiving is upon us.  What a great way to “walk the talk” .   My city of Atlanta has an amazing event called Hosea’s Feed the Hungry which is a nonprofit program that operates under the umbrella of the Martin Luther King Jr. People’s Church of Love.  It takes place at Turner Field, our baseball stadium.  Incredible numbers of people give of their…

Samhain Peace   Our Celtic wheel has turned to Samhain.  This time of year seems like such frenzy and activity.  Time to finish up all outdoor work before the coming winter darkness. Time to plan for the upcoming holidays.  And yet it is a time to gather in our energies in preparation for rest.  Mother Nature shows us her example in hopes we will follow suit.  How many of us do follow what the season is teaching?   As each day gets shorter and the night hours longer we can move into a state of peace.  How, you might ask?  Life is going at breakneck speed and while our sacred…

September and Squirrel Nutkin   At long last Mother Earth is balancing and the slow move toward the winter months begin.  I watch as the squirrels and chipmunks in my yard are gathering acorns and other nuts and hurrying away. The last of the hummingbirds are visiting the bird feeders getting fatter and fatter in anticipation of the long flight further south.   Self Discipline and Self Reliance are the virtues for this month and little Squirrel Nutkin is the perfect example of both of those ideas.   Having the discipline to prepare for our own needs in order to be self-reliant is something sorely lacking in our society these…

Gratitude Now we reap what we sow. Harvest begins as the fullness of summers heat envelops us.  Our walk this year through 12 virtues has brought us to gratitude. If we have brought the virtues into our heart, we have sown well and we begin to harvest the fruit of our labors. Take a moment and think about what you have sown since January.  What connections have you made or strengthened? What depth of understanding have you brought to your personal worship? What inner peace have you gained? The year flies past and we are so busy with life and all of its ups and downs. Yet our sacred time…

Beautiful July As I look around me in my little corner of the world, summer’s bounty is evident! Such amazing beauty just waiting to be noticed. I am reminded of the different sayings I was raised hearing. Beauty is as beauty does. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How does beauty apply to real life?  And how does beauty present itself on our spiritual path?  It is one thing to create a sacred space for a ritual that is magnificent and inspires the energy of the work to increase.  I love altars filled with flowers and candles and sparkling crystals!  It is a feast for the senses!  But…

Respect   Ah, June! Summer at last. The height of energy pulses through everything. Summer Solstice and Father’s Day show up on our calendars. How does our value of Respect fit in with, at the very least, these two occasions?   Let’s look at how respect shows up in our daily lives. It definitely seems to me that respect is an old fashioned notion when I watch the news or just go out into my community. Good grief, were these people raised in a barn? I can hear my grandmother say this very phrase.   Perhaps. As a parent, I hear kids talk back to their parents with no repercussions.…

May is all about Joy! So far we have looked at the first four of our year of values. January’s simplicity, February’s love, March’s order and April’s Faith moves us into May’s joy! Joy can seem very superficial but to feel deep contentment and grounding is joy at the core of our being. Do you sometimes feel guilty for being happy when so much heartache surrounds us? It is easy to join in the chorus of “woe is me” when everyone around us is complaining. And with the terrible economy and job losses there are serious issues facing us and those we know. Fear is quick to steal joy. So…
